Lucy Maud Montgomery was a brilliant author whose work captivated and enchanted readers of all ages for generations. Born right here on Prince Edward Island in New London to be precise, she drew inspiration from the Island's idyllic landscapes and rich cultural heritage for her writing. This is especially true when it comes to her beloved stories of Green Gables and Avonlea. Of course, Montgomery is best known for her Anne of Green Gables series, which follows the adventures of spirited Anne Shirley. Her vivid descriptions of Prince Edward Island, paired with Anne Shirley's endearing personality and imaginative spirit, have made this series a timeless classic that manages to connect with people from all walks of life, all around the world. Beyond Green Gables, Montgomery wrote several other book series, including the Emily trilogy, Pat of Silver Bush and The Story Girl, as well as several stand-alone novels and short story collections.

Today, over 80 years since her passing, Lucy Maud Montgomery continues to be celebrated as a literary giant in the world of storytelling. She was named a National Historic Person by the Canadian Government in 1943 and has appeared on everything from stamps and coins to the Google Doodle in 2015.

It’s safe to say that Lucy Maud Montgomery has left her mark on literature, but her work has also left an impact on Prince Edward Island. This year, there are a number of events taking place to celebrate her 150th birthday, including song cycle concerts and a special Green Gables Christmas celebration. You can even participate in an L.M. Montgomery Scavenger Hunt!
